VW, however, maintains that the cause of the engine fires has never been firmly established. The modifications will be incorporated in all new factorybuilt models.
VW will be contacting LT operators directly, and is emphasising the need for LT owners to contact their local VW dealers to arrang for the recall modification to be made
"at an early date". The work will be carried out free.
The company recalled a number of LT vans early in 1987 for modifications to the upper carburettor. One of the worst fires involved the death of a pensioner in an LT31 carrying 10 senior citizens home from a neighbourhood centre in 1986.
