DRIVERS at the Oxford branch of Cartransport Ltd stopped work on Thursday of last week, because they alleged that the delivery of British cars was being inhibited by the transport of imported cars.
A meeting on Tuesday failed to result in a return to work till the company management had negotiated with the shop stewards. The strike has not been given trade union backing.
Cartransport drivers say that there is three days' work involved in dealing with British Leyland cars already in stock. Picking up imported vehicles from the docks makes the waiting time for British cars worse and any further delay would mean that Cartransport could not stock any more British Leyland cars. This would increase BL's difficulties in finding space for finished cars when that company resumes full working.
D. M. Barrow, Cartranspores operations director, told CM this week that there was a stock of 700 Leyland cars at the depot and this represented about three days' work. But the cars were held for distributors and were delivered on their instructions.
