BRITISH RAIL has had its third price increase in 18 months for its parcels traffic approved by the Prices Commission. The service lost an estimated £20m last year.

The latest increase — a rise of 15 per cent — will come into effect on March 27 and follows two rises of 12.5 per cent within the 18-month period.

Rises will apply to both the general parcels service and the Red Star service which last year increased its volume of ,parcels carried and made a substantial profit.

It is also expected that the Post Office will apply for permission to increase its parcels rates by between 15 and 20 per cent soon — only nine months after it Increased its rates
