Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THE FIRST 25 Fiat 170 series 40-tonne (39.4-ton) tractive units for Britain were handed over to the company's UK distributors last week.

This first batch were all fitted with the 180kW (240bhp) six-cylinder engines, but limited numbers of the more powerful 246kW (330bhp) V8 170 will be available in the next consignment.

Fiat expects the ratio of six-cylinder models to eight cylinders to be about 5 to 1 in favour of the smaller unit.

With a capacity of 13.8 litres (840cuin) the six-cylinder has dry-cylinder liners and a high camshaft and it produces a maximum torque of• 890Nm (658Ibft) at 1,200rpm or. 1,130Nm (8321bft).

Central injectors and four valve heads are a feature of the V8 which is an oversquare engine with a stroke to bore ratio of 0.9 to 1.

Wet liners are used which have two sealing rings at the bottom.

When the V8 unit is specified the 170 sleeper-cab tractor has a weight penalty of 152kg (3cwt).

Each of the 170 series tractive units has a sleeper cab which is equipped with two bunks measuring 1.8m (6ft) by 0.6m (2ft) with full curtaining.

A low engine tunnel gives space for a third cab seat and the interior of the cab is sound-proofed. Two different gearboxes are employed on the 170s.

The six-cylinder has a Fiat eight-speed synchromesh splitter box while the larger model has a Fuller KT09513 13-speed range change.

Braking on both vehicles is dual air, which is said to meet new EEC regulations, and an exhaust brake is also provided.
