THE Government decision to reduce the Transport Supplementary Grant to South Yorkshire to virtually nothing was attacked last week by an Association of Metropolitan Authorities delegation to Transport Minister William Rodgers.

AMA Chairman Sir Robert Thomas said: "In South York shire's cases this year, the Government has reduced the allocation in a way that can only be described as punitive because the county has decided to continue its policy of bus fare support against the advice of the Government.

"It is, in our view, of the essence of local government freedom that an individual authority should be free to vary its expenditure without being subjected to Government action of this kind. I hope we made it clear to Mr Rodgers why we felt the grant system should not be wrongly used in this way again."
