MODIFIED tipping semi-trailers to carry fish are being produced by E. M. Wilcox of Peterborough as a direct result of trawlers moving to southern ports.
The new bodies have been made watertight to make sure that water does not spill from the fish loads. There have been complaints of this in the South West.
Wilcox spokesman John Neal told CM that the bodies are sealed with a specially designed plastic extrusion. which forms an 0-ring seal on the tailgate.
"There hasn't been much modification needed. The body was strong enough for the heavy fish loads and all we had to modify was the tailgate," said Mr Neal.
Since the trawlers moved from the northern fishing grounds following the introduction of the Icelandic 200-mile limit there has been a shortage of tippers to take mackerel from Plymouth to the northern fish meal factories.
The Wilcox bodies are mounted on Crane Fruehauf semi-trailers 29ft long by 5ft deep and 7ft 7in wide giving a 40cuyd capacity.
