ASUGGESTION that means should be provided -on refuse-collection vehicles for storing hot tea was made by Mr. John Ames, in a paper -which he recently read before members of the Institute of Public Cleansing. Mr. Ames, who is cleansing, salvage and transport officer of ,-Ghislehtirst and Sidcup Urban District Council, raised many pertinent points:
He was doubtful whether the use of light alloys had been sufficiently explored, particularly in connection with the manufacture of dustbins and in the construction of refuse-collection vehicles. He queried, too, whether sufficient attention was being paid, in a general way, to the comfort of the crews. — Some time ago, he said, the Institute set up .a committee to inquire and report on the provision of protective clothing and equipment for employees engaged in all .sections of the cleansing service. That committee made an excellent report, said Mr. Ames, but he wondered how many local authorities had even considered it, let .alone put its recommendations into operation.
He wanted to see that the men engaged in the vital work of refuse collection presented themselves to the public as part of an organized and important service, and not as a ragged army in retreat.
Dealing with refuse disposal, Mr. Ames was of the opinion that in the future • it would be confined to two systems—controlled tipping and utilization by mechanical Separation.
In the_thatter of street cleansing, the authorsaid that the channels of all niain. thoroughfares should be periodically-flushed . with water containing a disinfidtant. All pavements in shopping . areas should be washed, at least in hot weather;
Regarding the transport of road sweepings, far too many open lorries were used for this purpose, he thought. Only vehicles provided with adequate covers should be used.
To ensure maximum output, the speaker was of the opinion that all the transport facilities of a local authority, other than passenger vehicles, should be brought under unified control.

MECHANICAL HANDLING IN "PICTURES"
AFILM and slides dealing with mechanical handling and transport in the factory were shown last week to members of the London branch of the Industrial Transport Association. They were presented by Mr. D. Cherry Paterson, of Paterson Hughes Engineering Co.. Ltd., Bedford House. Strand. London, W.C.2.
The film was the fourth part of a fulllength feature nude specially for the Mechanical Handling Engineers' Association. It was in colour and complete with sound track, and included some excellent shots of production methods at the Luton factory of Vauxhall Motors, Ltd.
