A FTER nine months' working in the /-3-.current financial year, . _Cardiff Corporation's transport department shows a loss of t 146:731 The deficit on the trolleybuses is £19,000, mainly because of an increase of 3d. per mile in running expenses and a reduction in traffic receipts of about Id. per mile.
On the motorbuses the loss is £16,980, expenses having increased by 2.3d. per mile, whilst income has remained practically stationary.
• An increase in working expenses of 5d. per mile and a diminution in average receipts per car-mile of Id. are the main reasons for a loss of £50,269 on the tramways.,
Mr. J. F.Siddall, the transport manager, said that Wages had increased by 100 per cent., but fares had not been altered since 1939. The present application to be allowed to raise the penny fare to l3.d. might not be the end of
increased fares.
The committee reaffirmed a previous decision not to consider an application by drivers and conductors for bonus or merit payments. The earlier recommendation was referred bad: by the city council for further consideration.
INTER-STATE ROAD CODE BEING FORMED
NEW international custorris conventions have been drawn up by the inland transport committee of the Economic Commission for Europe, in preparation for a World road transport conference to be held in August.
The conventions deal with road priorities; the rights of cyclists, road signs and signals, croSiings, and the weights and size i of vehicles. Separate committees are to deal with road design and construction and the European road map. Objective of these conventions is to form the backbone of an international road code. '
