UNCONTROLLED pedestrian croSslugs should not be provided on roads not subject to-a speed limit. This is one of the recommendations of the Committee on Road Safety, the report of which has just been published.
Other recommendations are:---(1) The , waiting of vehicles within 45 ft. on the approach sideof a crossing should be . prohibited; (2) the penalty for, a breach . of the. Pedestrian -Crossing Regulations should be increased to £5, and (3) pedestrians should be encouraged to signal their intention to step on a crossing.
In the House of Commons on Monday, the Minister of Transport announced that it is proposed to make certain amendments to the existing regulations based on the Committee's ,report.
One of them would prescribe that drivers approaching controlled crossings would, when the signals were in their favour, normally have precedence over pedestrians. • On uncontrolled crossings the pedestrian's right to free and uninterrupted passage Would be maintained.
The :Minister said be was not in favour 'Of the suggestion that pedestrians should be encodraged to signal their intention to step on to a crossing.

LAst week Mr. 'Alfred Barnes. Minister of Transport,' inaugurated " work on the construction of the new trunk road near Neath. Glamorgan. When linked with the new Jersey Marine Road, which is . now nearing completion, it will shorten the present 12-mile journey between BritonFerry and Swansea by about six miles and provide a direct route to the Swansea Dock area.
