IV RING its visit to Newcastle, the LI Road Transport Executive's threeman working party did not complete its inquiry into the proposed area scheme for passenger transport in the north-east. After further conferences with Executive chiefs in London, the party will return to the north-cast, probably within the next few days.
Meanwhile, opposition to the scheme in the area continues. Members of the general public will have an opportunity of hearing the case against nationalization at a special meeting to be organized by the Omnibus Passengers' Protection Association, at the Durant Hall, Newcastle, on March 4, at 7.30 p.m.
Newcastle's Transport and Parliamentary Committees have expressed their views on the proposed division of the area into three districts. They recommend that Tyneside should be considered as a unit and not included in the Northumberland area, along with Gateshead, Felling and Whieltham. The committees feel that the proposal to set up an area board of eight members for the whole region would not secure sufficient representation in the interests of passengers.
In Scotland, Greenock Corporation is to ask the Convention of Royal Burghs, at its meeting in Edinburgh in April, to pass a motion that local authorities should be represented on district transport boards. The corporation wishes to ensure that local authorities have a voice in the control of services in ally scheme for the co-ordination of passenger transport in Scotland.
COMET GOODS -VEHICLES MODIFIED COLLOWING Leyland Comet passen1 ger-chassis practice, all Comet oilengined arid petrol-engined goods vehicles will, in future, be fitted with a flexible-link system of engine suspension. There are two rubber-bushed link shackles at the front of the engine and two at the rear.
Excessive oscillation of the engine at low speeds is effectively damped by a torque-reaction rod connecting the flywheel housing to the engine rear crossmember.
Other modifications include a new type of frame front cross-member incorporating fabricated components, and the repositioning of the hand-brake lever. This is now mounted centrally over the gearbox, with the rod mechanism running inside the chassis frame.
