HAVING considered the financial position of the transport undertaking, Portsmouth Corporation transport committee states that particular attention was paid during the whole of the examination as to whether the finance and general purposes committee should approve the extra buses proposed. As a result of the -suggestions made, the passenger transport committee has now agreed that 18 vehicles in its possession could be reconditioned at a cost of 1130 each, which means £2,240 for the year, instead of purchasing the 24 vehicles
asked for, the loan charges for which would amount to £8,000 per annum.
The transport committee was of opinion that the council should be called upon to lay down a definite policy as to whether the undertaking is to run at a reasonable profit for the general good of the city; to be commercially self-supporting, or to run for the convenience of the public, football crowds, special classes of workers, visitors, etc., any loss thus sustained being borne by the rates. The recommendation was to run the undertaking for the general good of the city.
