At the annual general meeting of the North London Sub-area of A.R.O., held on Monday, Mr. R. W. Sewi11, national director of the Association, referring to the acceptance by the Minister of Transport of the recomraeridations contained in the T.A.C. Report, • said that one striking thing was that it discarded, once and for all, any -arbitrary division of function between .road and rail, and that the trader was to have freedom of choice in the means of transport.

Referring to the extension of the tenure of licences, Mr. Sewill said that whilst he would like to regard it as entirely beneficial, it appeared there might be certain considerations.

Quoting a case in the North of England, Mr, Sewill said that a concern of nine years' standing, which . had been engaged in the transport of fish, had lost its entire fleet of about eight vehicles as the result of an -appeal by the railway companies. The reason given was that overriding circumstances made the vehicles redundant.

If this was going to be a consideration in the question of five-year licences it was very serious indeed, said Mr. Sewill, Change of Date.

Co.uncirs. Interest in Road Exhibition.

The B.R.F.'s recent exhibition in Maidstone was visited, in one day, by three Mayors—those of Gillingham. Chatham and Maidstone. This would seem to indicate a definite municipal interest in the Federation's road policy,
