Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

IS IT REALLY 12 months since the last Christmas holiday? The saying goes that "time flies when you're enjoying yourself". If that's so, CM has had a whale of a time! We've been busy, very busy, keeping up with the arguments, debates and decisions. We know that our readers have been equally busy but in different directions. For them, it has been a year not of great cheer but of extremely hard work. They have had to move fast just to hold ground on costs and rates. It is probably cold comfort to say that as the nation sits down to its massive coronary-inducing feast this Christmas, without road transport the food and wine• would not be there. As with Bob Cratchett, the true value of the road-transport or own-account operator is not appreciated.

The fact that they keep going is a matter which amazes many people. But not us. We know that, despite the low rewards, those men and women who keep the wheels of freight turning do so out of a sense of achievement. It seems that no challenge is too great. If it has to be moved it will be. As operators, engineers, traffic clerks, mechanics and cleaners sit down to their Christmas repast, let them remember their important role in our way of life. Road transport is as essential to a very merry Christmas as Father Christmas.

God Bless you Merry Gentlemen, let nothing you dismay.
