Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Two sets of regulations aimed at improving safety in the transport of radioactive substances by road have been made by Mr Peter Walker, Secretary of State for the Environment. Until now there has been no control over the movement of radioactive material by road.

The regulations, made under Section 5 of the Radioactive Substances Act 1948, are:—

a. The Radioactive Substances (Carriage by Road (Great Britain)) Regulations 1970.

b. The Radioactive Substances (Road Transport Workers (Great Britain)) Regulations 1970.

The Carriage by Road Regulations will come into operation on May 31 1971. Part of the Road Transport Workers Regulations came into effect on December 19 this year and the remainder on June 5 1971.

Two Codes of Practice will also be available soon. One, entitled "Code of Practice for the Carriage of Radioactive Materials by Road", will explain the provisions of the new regulations.

The second Code. entitled "Code of Practice for the Storage of Radioactive Material in Transit", is to assist those responsible for the temporary storage or warehousing of radioactive material.
