THE DEPARTMENT FOR Transport is organising a summit to raise the proile of lorry parking and encourage planners to give proposals the green light.
Transport minister Mike Penning is putting pressure on councils to tackle the national problem of truck parking and he thinks a meeting of developers, local authorities and industry stakeholders will be the catalyst to future parking development.
In addition, the Road Haulage Association (RHA) says it has received a draft copy of a government-commissioned study into lorry parking that will help councils and developers decide where truckstops should be built.
“Penning is keen to get more engagement with local authorities,” explains RHA infrastructure manager Chrys Rampley.
“It’s not necessarily the local authorities doing something; it’s allowing someone else to do it in their neighbourhood, or if we can identify the issues and problems maybe they would be more open to granting planning consent.
“A summit will deinitely raise the proile of the issue,” she adds.
