DHL EXPRESS continues to play down suggestions of possible strike action by GMB members, citing a meeting between the two parties last week when it was not even mentioned.

The union has been holding talks with the delivery company in pursuit of a revised pay and conditions package.

A "consultative ballot" of members revealed 89% supported a move to industrial action, which could hit the company in the run up to Christmas. Another meeting has been tentatively pencilled in for mid-September. A DHL spokesman says: "We don't believe we are in dispute with them and don't believe there is any threat of any strike action."

Mick Rix, the GMB's national executive officer, says the union hopes the company will move from its current position for the September talks.

"We are not going to rush straight to ballot if there is a chance with the negotiations," he adds.[But] it cannot be right that employees working for a multi-national conglomerate are receiving family tax credits and some are being paid just £5.57 an hour."
