Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

In Iveco and ERF will be offering the new new Eaton S. series 16-speed synchromesh gearbox box after series production begins at the end of the year. MAN has already included it in its line-up (CM 18-24 Aug): Leyland Dal has yet to make a decision but is taking a serious look at the new gearbox.

Iveco will offer the box as an option on the EuroStar 520. ERF will offer the S-series at both its torque ratings, making it suitable for all EC models.

ERF will also offer the latest SAMT B semi-automatic gearbox with improved electronics. This will enable the SAMT box to be used with electronically controlled engines such as the Cummins CELECT range.

The light shift loads of the Sseries gearbox are the result of Eaton's patented LF (Low Force) gear synchronisers. As the driver selects a gear, the movement of the synchroniser ring causes a spring-loaded mechanism to accelerate the contact between the synchroniser plate and ramps machined into the mainshaft splines. These ramps help to convert rotational torque from the synchroniser ring to axial force towards the new gear. The result is a faster shift and reduced driver effort.

Two versions of the box will he available with input torque ratings of 1,750Nm and 2,375Nm—a nine-speed version is also under development.

Other design features include a single rail shift, twin countershafts, an integrated air system and shift control assembly, an internal oil pump and helical cut gears throughout. The helical gears remove the need for noise encapsulation or shielding. Aluminium is used for the casing and integral clutch housing to reduce weight.

Eaton will be offering a corn

plete range of PT-Os, integrated retarders and power steering pump drives for the S-series.

L German gearbox manufacturer ZF will preview a new generation of gearboxes for vehicles from 7.5 tonnes GVW and above at the Hanover Show; for a full report see CM 8-14 September.
