• The United Road Transport Union has joined the National Reverse in Safety Campaign, which is calling for the mandatory fitment of reversing bleepers to all commercial vehicles.
The campaign is already backed by the Transport and General Workers Union, several MPs, local authority representatives, reversing-bleeper manufacturers and transport safety bodies such as the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents.
The growing lobby, which has snowballed over the past few months, is pressing for a meeting with Roads and Traffic Minister Peter Bottornley, who has so far declined on the grounds that there is no evidence of a serious problem.
