• A world shortage of ethylene glycol could lead to leapfrogging prices for antifreeze this winter. Wholesale prices have already trebled in recent months and high street retailer Halfords expects another hike of 70%.
An explosion at the Shell Norco refinery in Louisiana which wiped out E2 billion worth of chemical stocks, coupled with repairs at BP plants in Belgium and Germany, will cause an estimated 40% shortfall in Europe this winter, say experts.
Unipart says it will not be increasing its prices, which were fixed in May at E2.96 per litre, but reports black-market prices of £1,100 a tonne.
