• P&O has reopened its Dover-Boulogne ferry service for the first time since the seamen's strike closed it in January. The Pride of Canterbury sailed on the first of three daily crossings at the start of this week.
• A driver-training programme set up by Bristol courier company Direct Link is now in full swing. Following success with Citroen C15 drivers, the scheme has been extended to the HGV fleet. Direct Link training involves the police, road safety and vehicle maintenance experts.
• A plan backed by the construction firm Costain to ease congestion on the M25 by building a second tier 15 metres above is to be considered by the Government.
• Work on the Channel tunnel is now three months behind schedule and contractors have been warned that they must shape up or face huge financial penalties. Eurotunnel shares plunged on Monday as a fierce row developed between Eurotunnel, the Anglo-French Tunnel Group and tunnel builders Transmanche Link.
• Business is booming for vehicle weighing specialists Central Weighing thanks to the new requirement to weigh trucks before they board RO-RO ferries. Following record orders worth over 2150,000 this summer, joint managing director Richard Stokes says: "The penalties for overloading a goods van or lorry can be severe, leading ultimately to a heavy fine or loss of operator's license."
