• Bus and coach company National Welsh achieved a £22.5 million turnover in 1987 with pre-tax profits of £341,000.
During the year it added an extra 58 people to its workforce and boosted its Bustler minibus strength from 60 minibuses to 150.
National Welsh says there was a significant rise in passenger numbers because it increased its Bustler highfrequency services in Aberdare, Barry, Bridgend, Caerphilly, Cwmbran, Ebbw Vale, Pontypridd and the Rhondda Valleys. The company also expanded its international coach operations with the acquisition of four Daf coaches and now serves most Western European countries.
National Welsh says it is "delighted" with the results of its first complete year of deregulated operations. As well as losing more than £2 million in county council subsidies, the company also faced growing competition on its routes.
