• Leyland DAF's latest model of the Freighter fire appliance has a lowered chassis to allow easy cab access and repositioned air and fuel tanks to give maximum storage space within the body shell. A hydraulic tilt mechanism in the cab increases safety at high speed and also allows easier engine maintenance, says the company.
The heavy-duty-capacity alternator can deal with beacons, searchlights and roadlights, while the chassis has been designed to accept a wide range of different body specifications.
During tests with the Greater Manchester County Fire Service, the Freighter was tilted safely to over 390.
Greater Manchester Fire Brigade engineer Barry Martin says he likes the Freighter's Wabco Category 1 anti-lock braking system which includes optional drive slip control.
