Barney White, the new American managing director of Seddon Atkinson, has rolled up his sleeves for the job. He is usually at work before 7am and security gnards have several times mistaken him for an intruder.
One of his immediate aims is to try to eliminate the need for work under warranty, which is, he admits, "very annoying to our customersand is a waste of the company's money. Then he seeks greater flexibility in specifications to meet users' individual requirements.
Barney is a man of sensibility as well as a glutton for work. He has no intention of Americanising the company. He no doubt appreciates that to do so would be one of the best ways of alienating customers who regard Seddon Atkinson as a bastion of sound British engineering and integrity.
