More power for light vans, more payload for VC trucks

• Changes to the Chrysler United Kingdom vehicle range which will be seen at the Commercial Motor Show include a high-compression, higher-power petrol engine for the Commer PB light vehicles; automatic-transmission options for the Commer Walk-Thru van range; weight uprating for the Commer VC 4 and VC 5 truck types; and the introduction of standard factory-finish-paint options for most Commer, Kanier and Dodge models.

The high-compression-engine option in the PB range will benefit light bus and caravan-conversion applications but will also be popular with operators of vans where the• extra performance from the higher power output promises to impreve productivity without loss of fuel economy.

Output of the 1.72-litre Chrysler petrol engine is up from 52 bhp at 4200 rpm to 58 bhp net at a maximum of 4500 rpm and torque also improves from 82Ib ft at 2000 rpm to 841b ft at 2200 rpm. Compression ratio is up from 7.5 to 1 to 8.4 to 1.

The Borg Warner Model 35 automatic transmission is now an option on Walk-Thru models KC 25, KC 30 and KC 40 (for nominal payloads of 25, 30 and 40cwt respectively). The new higher capacity Borg Warner Model 12 transmission will be used in the 'KC 40 and KC 60 with the Perkins 4.236 engine (nominal payloads 2 tons and 3 tons respectively).

Higher gvw for the VC 4 and VC 5 increases the body and payload allowance of these twomodels from 5.45 tons and 6.7 tons respectively to 6.05 tons and 7.2 tons;

gvw of the VC 4 becomes 8.5 tons; the fro] axle is plated for 3.06 tons and the rear 5.7 tons. The VC 5 is uprated to 10 tons gv — 3.4 tons front axle and 7 tons rear aid. The existing 7.9-ton-gross VC 4 an 9.5-ton-gross VC 5 will continue i production.

An 11ft 9in.-wheelbase VC 4 chassis /ca to the new specification will be on show Earls Court and, like the majority c exhibits on display, it will be painted in on of the colours now available a factory-finish options. Operators can specif any one of five colours — Safari Beigi Firebrand Red, Carribean Blue, Oasi Green or Arctic White.
