Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

VERY few changes have been made to the BMC Mini range of cars over the past eight years which probably explains why this model with its modest price, economy, delightful handling. ease of manoeuvring, and parking, and the ability to squeeze into the tightest of spaces remains in such demand.

At a list price of £509 including purchase tax the Mini represents good value for money. A further £46 buys a de luxe version, while a Mini fitted with an automatic transmission costs £647. Other models in the Mini range include a Countryman priced at £605, while the dearest model is a 1275 Mini-Cooper S at £849.

The four members of COMMERCIAL MOTOR who drove the normal 848 c.c. model we tested praised it on general roadholding, but opinions differed when it came to comfort, and visibility, due to their varying heights and arm lengths.

The noise from the engine compartment was fairly high, especially when accelerating hard.

The gear-changing is not a strong point on the Mini (though an option now is an automatic transmission). What proved to be very irritating for all drivers was the restricted rear view afforded by the tiny mirror fitted. Wing mirrors should be standard. Driver comfort could be better, but again price plays an important part and one gets what one pays for.

On a smooth road, the Mini's ride is comfortable for all passengers even under hard acceleration and braking, but on bumpy surfaces the ride deteriorates noticeably, with some fore-and-aft pitching motion. A full complement of passengers improves the comfort and the lack of roll is also very important in this respect.

Considering that the wheelbase is a mere 6ft 8in and length 10ft overall, accommodation for four adults plus luggage is adequate. The Mini's ability to cover long distances on a small amount of petrol is very important, plus its willingness to operate on regular grade petrol.

No matter what criticisms are levelled at it, the Mini remains a winner.
