Modified welder

MODIFYING the original two-stroke petrol engine used to power a Hayter portable Mighty Midget heavy-duty welding set has resulted in a saving of 151b— achieved by combining the flywheel and magneto in one unit.

It is the JLO 372, made in Hamburg by JLO Werke, a 372cc unit running on lowgrade two-stroke fuel. It gives a working time of 2.1 hours, claim the makers. With this modified engine, the welding machine is capable of continuous on-site welding using a 6g electrode.

Simple controls for the welder include the choice of 18 settings between 30 and 200 amps, and the arc strike voltage produced by the alternator is 70 volts A.C. at 427 cycles per second.

Made by: Hayters Ltd., Spellbrook, Bishop's Stortford, Herts.

Price: Complete with two-wheeled framework £305.
