George Arthur Ashley has been appointed a director and deputy general manager of the Atlantic Steam Navigation Co. Ltd., and Frank Bustard and Sons Ltd. Mr. Ashley began his career with the White Star Line of Liverpool in 1928. In 1946 he joined Col. Frank Bustard, at Atlantic, who had just started the Transport Ferry Service.

With TFS Mr. Ashley has been closely

concerned with the pioneering and development of roll-on /roll-off. He helped to organize the first roll-on /roll-off commercial freight service from Preston to Northern Ireland in May, 1948, using converted tank landing ships.

At Tilbury and Felixstowe he helped to forge the first UK-Europe commercial road freight link. As chief traffic manager Mr. Ashley has been responsible for the build-up
