BETTER service and substantial savings in capital and running costs will result from a new joint operational arrangement on coach services between London and Clacton-on-Sea, Walton-on-the-Naze and Jaywick which comes into force on October 2.
The Grey-Green service of George Ewer and Co. Ltd. will combine with Eastern National and Suttons to operate joint services under the name, "Essex Coast Express".
Subject to Traffic Commissioners' approval Dovercourt will also be in the service by combining at that end with existing stage services carrying considerable traffic.
There will be full inter-availability of tickets on the new schedules, which will provide three daily winter services in place of the two provided previously by separate operators and five in the summer with extra coaches on Saturdays.
Jaywick, with its Butlins camp, will become available from twice as many East London pick-up points. On the operators' side there will be a 20 per cent saving on running costs alone.
Victoria coach station will be added to the pick-up points daily during the summer and at week-ends during the winter, thus linking Victoria direct to Walton for the first time.
The King's Cross boarding point will be the Eastern National Coach Station in Pentonville Road—from which Grey-Green services to Barwick. Felixstowe and Yarmouth will also run.
"We are proud of this outstanding example of
initiative by the industry", says Ewer chairman Mr. J. H. Ewer.
"It has come spontaneously, without Government direction or any other outside pressures. Moreover, it combines three very different elements—ourselves (a public company), a TfIC unit and a private operator."
