rELVE haulage firms were fined a total ovi£498 at Stanhope (Durham) Court on 250 charges of overloading lorries at a Weardale quarry owned by the Slater Group of companies.

The prosecution alleged that there had been systematic overloading and a disturbing state of affairs had been revealed.

Salkeld Brothers (Transport and Plant) Ltd., of Consett, admitted 130 charges and were fined £260.

Blame

Fined £2 for each offence were:– R. Gallaher, Blackhill (14 offences), Richmond Brothers, Frosterley (one), A. Parks, Burnhope (five), J. Peart, Wearhead (six), K. Kay, Hexham (two), J. Stoors. Tow Law (30), G. W. Lee, Frosterley (52), J. R. Henderson, Crook (one), and K. Redfeam (seven). Mr. A. J. Vicars, prosecuting for the Ministry of Transport, said that the Slater Group was not blameless for allowing the lorries to leave overloaded, but was not being prosecuted.

A Ministry inspector stated that Slater had been told that it would not be prosecuted if it produced its records.
