wJ. KEEN and Sons, haulage con
• tractors, of Essex, appeared before the Metropolitan LA last week at a Section 178 hearing for the second time in two months.
On the last occasion Mr. D. I. R. Muir suspended six vehicles for two months. This time he reserved his decision.
The company had since its last appearance received five GV9s but Mr. M. Jackson-Lipkin, for Keen, submitted that only one should be considered. In the other four cases the vehicles had either been sold before the issue of the GV9 or were otherwise out of service.
Daily inspection The company operated a daily inspection and repair system to combat the rigours of tippers working on sites. Vehicles were maintained and serviced each evening
and at weekends.
The documentation and records relating to the system were criticized by Mr. Jackson-Lipkin. "But", he said "the system works".
When the previous suspension was imposed on its licence, Keen switched the vehicles from its B licence to a C licence. The person responsible for the vehicle maintainance of the fleet for 22 years had now left the company.
LOAD-LUGGER GRANT
C. W. HARRISON (WESTERN) LTD., of The Old Silk Mills, Taunton, has been granted an addition to its A licence by the Western LA of one Telehoist load-lugger—first machine of its type in the area. The application was opposed by Cleansing Service (Southern Counties) Ltd., of Southampton, and W. Hemmings (Wastage Disposal) Ltd., of Bristol.
