T" United Kingdom becomes a party to the CMR Convention on October 19 says the MoT. This means that British international hauliers will operate under the ECE Convention on the Contract for the International Carnage of Goods by Road, under the Carriage of Goods by Road Act 1965 which came into force on June 5 this year.
CMR lays down standard conditions for the international carriage of goods by road, defines the obligations and liabilities of the carrier, and states certain methods of procedure.
For example, there is a standard CMR consignment note in quadruplicate, the copies being for consignor, consignee, carrier and file.
Goods-in-transit insurance under the CMR Contract gives better cover with a higher premium: the cover extends to £3,000 per ton compared with £800 per ton under UK cover.
The RHA can supply details and also copies of the CMR consignment note, expected to become compulsory for international haulage.
