THE Northern Licensing Authority has rejected a proposal by Cumberland County Council to enforce the use of smaller buses on country roads. The Authority stated that the slightly lower cost of one-man operation would be more than offset by the lower earning capacity of the buses, because of their smaller carrying capacity and the need for increased duplication. He added that bus proprietors were not in favour of the proposal.
'The council has been informed that it would be necessary to examine every application for bus services in the county and make representations for narrow buses to be employed wherever possible.
Some months ago the council sug gested to bus operators that the use of narrow 20-seaters would be the best way to cater for the county's transport needs. This method, it was contended, would be better than the costly widening and strengthening of country roads to carry the normal type of bus.
INTEGRATION: ANOTHER STEP
UNDER a reorganization of. district commercial offices in the Eastern, London, Midland, North-eastern and Western Regions of the Railway Executive, the boundaries of the districts will. as far as possible, be made co-terminous with those of the Road Haulage Executive.
This has been done to accord with integration policy. The reorganization in the Scottish Region was done last year. The arrangements for the Southern Region will be made shortly.
NEW lid. COIN PROPOSED
TOINT representations have been jagreed by the Passenger Vehicle
Operators' Association with other organizations, in pressing for the introduction of a new coin valued at lid. Millions of transactions, involving this sum, occur on buses each year, particularly with the disappearance of the Id. fare. It is felt that the new coin will become ever more necessary with the inclusion of so many id. units in fares.
