Promising Returns for May Not Maintained in Statistics for Following Month

I T was with interest that we received the registrations of new vehicles for June of this year, in view of the recovery staged in May, following a pronounced downward tendency in the opening months of the year. Although a little ground has been lost, so far as commercial vehicles are concerned, the June registrations cannot be regarded as altogether unsatisfactory. The aggregate total for June, for all types of motor vehicle, was 40,844, contrasted with 34,740 a year earlier, of which goods vehicles were responsible for 5,375, as against 5,419 in June, 1938; and hackneys 940 (1,040).

2-24.-tonners Show Up Well.

The number of vehicles licensed in the petrol goods class was 4,982, compared with 5,082 in the preceding year. The 2-24-tonners again reached the peak, with a total of 1,682, an increase of 18 on the figure for last year, followed by the 12-cwt.-1-tonners with 968 registrations (1,099 a year earlier). The totals recorded in the remaining three divisions covered by the 24-ton unladen weight limit were as follow, last year's figures being given in parentheses :—Not exceeding 12 cwt., 753 (818); 1-14-tons, 560 (438) ; 14-2-tons, 746 (725). Over this limit, 273 vehicles were licensed, compared with 340 in June, 1938. An increase was recorded in the registrations of oil-engined goods vehicles, A32

the total for June this year being 193, against 159 a year ago. The 3-4-tonners reached the highest total (43 against 37), followed by the 6-7-tonners with 36, contrasted with 29 in the previous year. The 2-24otonners, however, recorded the biggest increase (34 in June, 1939, as against 17 a year earlier).

The electric vehicle also showed a slight increase, the total of 92 for June ot this year being four above that for June, 1938, The 12-cwt.-1-tonner accounted for most of the registrations, the comparable figures being 64 for this year and 48 a year earlier.

There were 19 vehicles licensed for drawing trailers, as against 24 a year ago.

So far as multi-wheeled goods vehicles are concerned, the articulated six-wheeler and the rigid eight-wheeler showed an advance, the figures being 37 (against 27) and 47 (against 31), respectively. A big drop (44) was recorded by the five-wheeler (mechanical-horse pattern) with 38 registrations, whilst the total for rigid-frame six

wheelers fell from 55 a year earlier • 38 in June last.

Agricultural vans and lorries, th June, returned a figure of 97, compars with 84 in the previous year, whil under the heading of agricultur engines (5s. class) 758 ploughb machines were registered, against X a year earlier. Tractors for gene,r haulage advanced from 17 to 23, tho for agricultural purposes, at 15, beii one ahead of the figure for last yea Hackney Oilers Advance.

With regard to hackney vehick increases occurred in two of the thr sections into which they are divide These were trolleybuses with a total 109, as against 38, and oil-engin vehicles with 434 registrations, co trasted with 332. Petrol-engined hac neys fell from 670 to 397, the bigg declines taking place in the clan covered by the 20-26-seater (71 agair 146), the 26-32-seater (39 compar with 135) and, the 32-40-seater ( against 70).

In the case of hackney oilers, t peak was reached by the 48-56-seal with 180 registrations, contrasted wi 146 a year ago, followed by the 32-4 seater, which accounted for IA against 38.

Registrations for the six mon.' ended June, 1939, totalled 33,7 goods vehicles and 5,040 hackneys, t comparable returns for last year bei 36,507 and-5,265,
