NEC, costs BRS about £1,000 on each new truck. But that pales into insignificance compared to BRS's planned fleet replacement programme. "We'll be taking 100 new trucks in May, another 100 in the summer and several hundred in the last quarter of the year," Walker reports.
BRS's goal is to reduce the average age of its 2,800 vehicles from three years to two, and Walker is fully aware that this will entail a "phenomenal" investment.
BRS is pleased with current utilisation levels, but Walker insists there's still room for improvement here too, "because our service levels are the best". However, rather than blitzing new business BRS plans to maximise existing custom.
Despite the recent "strategic alliance" between BRS and Trans America, which allows BRS to offer both ends of an artic, Walker is adamant that BPS won't go back into trailer rental. Neither will it chase van rental business: "We've got 100 on the fleet but we'll concentrate on what we're best at-7.5 tonnes and above." Talking of which, Volvo's ownership of Renault allows BRS to get a "proper' 7.5-tonner like the Midlum.
Walker insists: 'We're not tied to Renault, we'll look at another manufacturer:" But don't expect to find anything other than a Volvo at the heavy end in BRS. Some things don't change.
