Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• The European Commission wants to harmonise maximum truck weights at 46 tonnes for 3+3 combinations, 44 tonnes for 3+2s and 42 tonnes for 2+3s.

John Berry of the Commission's transport directorate told CM last week that loads on bridges would not be greatly increased if vehicles were maximum length. He hinted at these plans last October (25-31 October 1990).

But Berry says he is opposed to an 11.5-tonne drive axle,

which will become legal after 1992, The plans for harmonisation along these lines still have to be formed into a proposal to be presented to the Commission. LI MAN's technical boss has called for a change in the drawbar regulations to allow a coupling of 0.7m and a cab of 2m within the maximum vehicle length of 18.35m.

The shorter cab would still allow "comfortable conditions for the driver", insists Dr Klaus Schubert.
