Despite the lack of activity in the tipper field at present, the Road Haulage Association has a wide range of exhibits on show at its Silver Jubilee Tipcon at Harrogate. Bodybuilder looks at some of the most interesting.

• EM Wilcox has three models on show, having ended a long period of uncertainty by becoming a member of the Fruehauf (SESR) group.

One of its exhibits, a Scania GB demonstrator, has a new 12.2m insulated Wilcolite body on a P93 6x4 chassis; the first of a new smooth-sided design. Also displayed is a fixed-side monocoque body with Edbro DX16 tipping gear for bulk loads mounted on an ERF 4 rigid chassis.

Sister company Crane Fruehauf, which competes on trailer sales, has refined its bathtub tipper design and has a 42re tri-axle version on display.

Based on CF's 1650 chassis with standard T air suspension and lifting front axle it has new front ram and rear hinge bar mountings. These accept load cells for on-board weighing systems without further modification.

A lower 200mm body and chassis step accommodates a general trend towards lower fifth-wheel heights. In addition, bonded rubber pads on the body ribs help reduce noise when running empty.

Two bodybuilders team up with Multidrive to produce artics with up to 20% more payload than 8 x 4 rigids, coupled with increased manouevrability and traction.

An ERF 6x2 Multidrive for Fenstone Quarries with 16m3 aluminium Wilcox aluminium dropside body on a Cargo 7.5tonne chassis, equipped with a new Atlas three-tonne crane.

A new type of steel Ultralite body for aggregate work is available from York Group tipper specialist Neville Charrold. It is on show mounted on an ERF 17 tonner together with a larger version of its Nipper body range, fitted on a 10-tonne Roadrunner chassis.

In addition to Supalowda and Paylowda tipper trailers, Don-Bur also has a 10.5m long, 49.4m3 all-alloy Multilowda on display which is destined for a customer in Portugal. Rate at 55 tonnes gross, the trailer accommodates a George Neville Easysheet autocover within its four-metre overall height.

Specialist container trailer builder Maxilode is exhibiting a tipping version of its Max slide sliding bogie skeletal trailer. Coupled to a Leyland Daf 95-400 4x 2 tractor the 30-tonne outfit has a 6.9m outer axle spread, and its container is set forward of the rearmost axle for optimum weight distribution. For discharge the bogie slides forward leaving the container at the rear of the trailer. Both the MAN and Leyland Daf 17-tonners have 5.4m3 steel FM tipper bodies with Effel 7600 grabs.

David MacKrill Engineering has stepped up the size of its twocompartment, glass collection bodywork with a 16m3 version for 17-tonners. This is shown on a Seddon-Atkinson municipal chassis, complete with twin side lifts and Drum tipper gear.

Lacre PDE is hoping to attract the attention of local authorities with its Rolonof container handling equipment. As is Welford Truck Bodies which has two vehicles on show. One is an MAN 17tonner complete with Pesci eight-tonne crane, pneumatic barrier rig and steel drop-side body with underfloor tipping gear.

Drum Engineering, which is celebrating its centenary this year, has brought along its latest rams plus a special PT-0 for blower use and a new D900 blower unit, it delivers contaminant-free air at up to 2.0bar pressure and is accoustically-clad to meet noise legislation.

Ultimate Hydraulics has three versions of its Harsh underfloor tipping gear on show. One is on a Volvo FL7 6x4 with Massey Truck Engineering bodywork and has been made especially for narrow chassis.
