• Leyland Daf s network of 74 distributors is to be cut to about 60 — and the group is understood to be busy selecting the fanchises it wants to keep.
Leyland Truck Distributors' Association chairman Sam Newton says: "If you look at the LIDA and its 52 members, 75% must be going to survive." He is keen to stress that the Leyland network will become part of the "most profitable and capable sales organisation in the UK."
The members of the association were in a bullish mood at their annual conference in Blackpool last week, and according to chaimian Sam Newton, "there has been a definite hardening of the market — overall — in the past 12 months. Anyone who's giving away trucks today must be crazy."
Confidence at the meeting was further boosted by Leyland Des director of sales and marketing, Roger Phillips, who told the dealers: "The product range will remain stable for at least 18 months. Distributors will be able to face the market in the knowledge that they
have total manufacturer support."
fl Daf, for its part, has a legacy of 22 main dealers and 18 service outlets to bring to the new organisation. Daf says
