3% increase in 11GV traffic in 1986, against a 5% increase in road traffic as a whole on Britain's roads.
The most dramatic change in freight traffic was recorded among articulated vehicles. There was a 30% increase in the number of articulated vehicles with five or more axles operating on Britain's roads, compared with a 4% fall in tri-axle antics, and a 5% drop in four-axle artics.
Rigid vehicle traffic was also 2% up on the year, with an increase of 5% in the traffic of four-axle rigids. Light van traffic rose 6% and bus and coach traffic rose by just 1%.
