• Newcastle-based express parcels carrier Northumbrian Carriers has opened a second depot in Carlisle and plans to add a third, in Bathgate, later
this year.
The company's headquarters are also on the move, to a new 743m2 site in Newcastle's City Road at the end of the month.
Established in 1982 by exdriver Maurice Birkett, Northumbrian Carriers employs 16 drivers and handles specialist delivery services to remote areas of the North East for most of the big hauliers in the region.
Turnover has increased from 28,000 in the first year of trading to 2150,000 in 1986 and Birkett intends to double that in the year ending June 1987.
The fleet, mostly Ford Transits and Freight Rover Sherpa 200s, has twelve vehicles based at the Newcastle depot with a further four in Carlisle.
