Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

A £4,400 LORRY BAN has been agreed Tor London's South Chiswick area, and is due to come into force in approximately three months.

The ban, except for access, will affect all lorries over 7.5 tonnes gross in an area bounded by the A4, A316, and the River Thames. There will be a full system of warning notices and advance warning signs in the area.

Pointing to the advantages the scheme offers local residents, Greater London Council North Area planning committee chairman John Putnam said: "Spot checks made last year showed that out of a total of 631 heavy lorries entering the area on a weekday, over half did not really need access.

"In addition, for the two main routes in the area — Strand on the Green/Hartington Road and Staveley Road — the number of heavy goods vehicles using the roads unnecessarily was more than 60 per cent," he added. • While the scheme is in line with the new DTp standard of gross rather than unladen weights, the GLC's imposition of a 7.5tonne rather than a 16.5tonne limit is unlikely to satisfy operators. The consistent Freight Transport Association policy has been to press for the higher limit, as it is easier to enforce.
