which inflate to 206 kN/sq.m (30 lb psi) and achieve the exact contour of the tyre, with the seven sizes of pneumatic Mandrels interchangeable with each machine to cover the whole range of earthmover tyres.

Bead adaptors are fitted with an adjustable bridge to restirct bead growth to the tyre's natural running position. This eliminates distortion, while vulcanising under pressure ensures that there is no stress between patch and casing.

The steam version incorporates a steam control station with regulators and steam traps for total temperature control. The electric machine uses an electronic master control station, which achieves a simple failsafe operation throughout the curing cycle by means of transistorised controllers.

It is available in 230V singlephase only, 50 or 60 cycle.

The air control panel incorporates a flow control valve built-in inching features and regulators, line pressure gauges and actual readout gauges. It is claimed the machines can save up to 40 per cent in operators' time.

Below: Hartridge is a household name in fuel injection serving equipment. It also produces a combined tachograph tester and chassis dynamometer. Leslie Hartridge Ltd, Buckingham MK18 1EF. Tel: (02802) 3661.

The Hartridge Clayton Chassis Dynamometer provides a simple method of testing a vehicle under working conditions within the workshop. It can be used in conjunction with a variety of special test equipment, such as an engine analyser, smokemeter or tachograph tester, to give ' critical examination of specific operational areas at varying load and speed conditions.

An optional and declutchable inertia flywheel can be added to the dynamometer to simulate the momentum needed when testing automatic transmissions. Speed and power figures are displayed on two easily rea&and illuminated scales which are mounted in a mobile console which can be positioned to suit the test driver's convenience.

Two versions of the dynamometer are available and an additional bogie roll unit can be supplied to accommodate vehicles with twin drive axles.

The smokemeter can be used to monitor most test cycles. Test results are displayed on a meter that reads in Hartridge smoke units and absolute units of light absorption, and with the lug down system a printer produces a trace of smoke output against speed over the engine operating range.

The tachograph tester comprises a set of support rolls, which can be those of a chassis dynamometer or lug-down system, and to which a retractable odometer roll and a photo electric revolution counter have been added. The odometer roll is used to measure the rolling diameter of the driven wheels and the photoelectric revolution counter to record the number of wheel revolutions.

Information from these two sources plus that received from a tacho generator attached to the tachograph drive cable is fed into a mobile instrument console where a digital display presents the turns ratio or distance travelled as instructed by a remote control.

The Lucas Hartridge beam tester Mk3 has been developed to test and set headlights of all shapes and sizes, of any beam pattern and of any intensity. The beam tester is mounted on a frame which gives a wide height adjustment range and so is suitable for use on all private and commercial vehicles. It can be used for statutory testing or for alignment checks after rectification work.

George Kuikka Ltd, Hill Farm Avenue, Leavesden, Watford, Harts WD2 781.

Hunger Brake Maintenance equipment comprises a vertical turning machine — Model BTD1 — which turns and grinds brake drums of any size and design — with and without hub-up to outer diameters of 6 50mrn (25.6in).

The horizontal brake drum and disc turning and grinding machines — Model B321 — enables all sizes of brake drum to be machined complete with wheels — single or twin. Wheels up to 1981mm (Thin) diameter can be handled, with a turning and grinding diameter of up to 990.6mm (39in).

A right-angle drive for machining brake discs can be fitted to the main spindle for this purpose.

Complementing the B321 machine is the Brake Lining Turning machine — Model BRA 1 — for hub reduction axles and conventional axles. Only the wheel and the brake drum have to be removed for machining the brake linings. The machine is mounted on the register of the wheel hub — a vertically adjustable trolley enables this to be carried out in a few minutes.

All these machines can be supplied with dust and swarf extraction equipment and a variety of accessories.

After surface grinding of a diesel engine block, the height of the counterbores must be readapted to the size of the liner rims less the height of the protusion. Also in the case of leaking liners, the counterbores have to be refaced — preferably on the vehicle — without removing the engine.

Above: For the lighter vehicle, this Repco air-activated unit has a 2,400kg (5,280 lb) capacity and comes complete with rubber blocks to protect the underside ofla vehicle.

The MIRA BB Unit carries out both operations. The unit is hand-driven and is fixed by means of an electromagnet to the block.

Additional operations can be carried out with extra tools and centring elements such as chamfering of the counterbores to the desired angle, refacing of the sealing faces on aluminium cylinder heads and cutting of the sealing grooves on cast iron cylinder heads.
