A POTENTIAL rival for Coras lompair Eireann's Irish-built Bombardier bus designs has .come in the shape of a Marshallbodied Scania BR112DH which has been loaned by Scania Great Britain.
The 78-seater bus will begin an extended evaluation on Dublin city services soon.
While the Bombardier specification, incorporating General Motors Detroit Diesel 6V71 en gine and Allison gearbox, is known to be less fuel efficient, CIE insists officially that the Scania has been borrowed merely as part of a continuous programme of tests.
The first of the 20 Bombardier Expressway coaches have been launched on the Dublin-Donegal service, following initial trials on the remoter Cork-Ballina service.
The chain of disasters which attended the rolling out of the first coach last year (CM November 22, 1980) was continued with the launch of the coaches in Dublin. The first vehicle developed a crippling air compression fault only 15 miles outside Dublin, and passengers had to continue their journey in one of the discredited CIE Leylands.
