Some people in the Road Haulage Association go faint or furious when anyone suggests that the RHA ought to get involved in trading activities, Tipping group co-ordinator Kerril Spencer is not one of them. He told a colleague last week that he thought the Association should at least get involved in setting up a London area clearing house to provide return loads, especially for those operators such as tipper men who are not regular long-distance travellers but from time to time get a load to London and need a reliable backload.
The rates that were offered might not be anything to write home about, but he feels that at least they would be sure of getting paid and within a reasonable time. Although it would obviously be unjust to take it as a criticism of all London clearing houses, Kerril says .there are not a few operators who have burnt their fingers with fly-by-nights and never been paid.
