proportion of faults on new vehicles was revealed by Freight Transport Association inspections last year. The Association's inspectors examined 309 vehicles delivered to members by seven British and t w o Continental manufacturers. A total of 2,725 defects were found, giving an average of 8.82 per vehicle.

The inspectors report that an average of 1.37 GV9 items were found on each vehicle of which 0.85 were classified as serious by the inspector involved. Serious non-GV9 items average 0.65 per vehicle, minor non-GV9 items 6.80.

The figures show a slight worsening in the situation over the previous year with braking systems being the worst offenders. Standard ol steering systems, rear axles and fuel systems also fell.
