American-type Rings THE Spirolox retaining ring is now being made by Weilworthy, Ltd., Lymington, Hants, by agreement with tbe Ramsey Corporation of America. It consists of a spiral of spring steel with rounded edges to prevent fretting of grooves, and the space between the two ends is crimped so that it lies flat. When designed to spring outwards into a housing, the outside diameter of the ring exceeds the closed diameter by a calculated amount, and for an inspringing ring the free bore diameter is smaller than the shaft groove. Notches are provided at each end for removal, and for ordinary assembly no tool is needed: furthermore, only a screwdriver is required for removal. • The absence of lugs on the Spirolox might often avoid the need for special machining, and the full concentricity of the ring ensures perfect dynamic balance when used on rotating shafts. The normal range of sizes is from 1-10in. diameter. Rings can be made extra thick when they have to accommodate side thrusts. Price is competitive.
