AFTER a direct road journey of nearly 2,100 miles, 7 tons of boiler tubes are due to be delivered in Palermo, Sicily, this week-end, having been loaded in Sheffield and Birmingham last Saturday. The tubes are urgently required for an Italian vessel at the port, the most southerly destination yet served by a vehicle using the Tilbury-Antwerp ferry of the Transport Ferry Servye. The delivery is being carried out under the auspices of the Anglo-Overseas Transport Co., Ltd., in collaboration with Northern Ireland Trailers, Ltd., and Messrs. van Gaever, Antwerp. The tubes were delivered to Tilbury and placed on the "Empire Celtic" for collection by a Belgian haulier on Tuesday.

124,000 profit this year, they will have to pay £5,000 profits tax under the new method of assessing this levy announced in the Budget. This was stated last week by Cllr. S. W. Bridges, chairman of the transport committee.

He added that about five municipal undertakings were similarly affected, and it was proposed to ask the Municipal Passenger Transport Association to approach the Inland Revenue authorities on the matter.

The department made a £24,000 profit last year, compared with £29,000 in the previous 12 months. Increases in fares introduced towards the end of last year had produced the additional revenue expected.

NEW AIR SUSPENSION_

ANEW air-suspension system, known as the York Airpoise, will be exhibited privately in London next Monday by the York Trailer Co., Ltd., in conjunction with Yorkshire Engineering and Welding Co. (Bradford), Ltd. It will be seen fitted to a trailer tanker.

Another York development that may be announced at the same time is an airpowered adjustable vertical landing gear.

WAITING BAN REPORT

TT was expected that the Minister, of Transport would announce in the House of Commons on Wednesday afternoon the findings of the Samuels inquiry into the proposal to ban loading and unloading at 23 points in London. The report was thought to be generally favourable to commercial-vehicle operators.

NEW GARDNER COMING

DRODUCTION later this year' of a new high-powered engine for road transport and other purposes is forecast by Mr. J. H. S. Gardner, chairman of L. Gardner and Sons, Ltd., in his annual report. This is thought to be a sixcylindered engine of 150 b.h.p.

Mr. Gardner says that the prospects for this year are not reassuring, but efforts have been made to widen the sphere of application of the company's products.
