Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

REGULARLY averaging 53 m.p.h. IA over good sections of road, four Daimler CVD6 coaches fitted with Daimler 8.6-litre engines are operated by Newman Bros.. Ltd., one of the largest private operators in New Zealand, on a daily service from Christchurch to Nelson, via Kaikoru and Blenheim. The total distance is 300 miles, 180 miles of which is over dirt roads, and the coaches have to negotiate three river fords over 2 ft. deep, as well as traverse the Lewis Pass.

Each vehicle is fitted with 25 luxury seats with folding central arm-rests, and the entire body behind the rear wheel-arches is devoted to luggage space. A full-height bulkhead separates the saloon from the luggage compartment, which carries up to 3,500 lb. of freight. Passengers' personal baggage is carried also in three underfloor lockers running the full width of the body and in the normal interior racks.

The vehicles, with bodywork by Steel Bros., Ltd., Christchurch, are 31 ft. 7 ins, long and 8 ft. wide. Special interior fittings include sponge' rubber headrests on each seat, an airconditioning installation, radio and public-address equipment. Curtains are provided for protection from the sun.

Two of the vehicles have already run 100,000 miles on this service, without undue wear and loss of .economy, despite the severe conditions. The average fuel-consumption rate of these two for a year has been 12 m.p.g.
