I NDICATIONS are now beginning to appear that the third Budget which has increased the cost of fuel will be responsible for a third round of fares increases. Operators who have so far raised their charges only once, as well as those who have already advanced their rates twice, may be forced to apply again to the Licensing Authorities.

467 Routes Affected

Eastern Counties Omnibus Co., Ltd., and the Norwich -Omnibus Co., Ltd., have now applied for permission to vary charges on 455 and 12 routes respectively. it is proposed that on all town services, tickets now costing 2d.-51d. shall go up by id., whilst on country services those from id.-51d. will go up by id. Thereafter, it is suggested that Id. be added to fares from 6d.-1s. 5d., 2d. to those between is. 6d. and 2s. 5d., 3d. to those from 2s. 6d. to 3s. 5d.,. and 4d. to those over 3s. 6d. All id. units in the fare tables above 6d. will be eliminated if the applications succeed.

Return fares will, according to the application, be established at a rate of 11 times the single charge and workmen's returns, available until 8 a.m., will be li times the single farewith a

minimum of 44d.

A similarapplication, affecting fares between 1id. and Is., and proposing additions of id. and Id., has been filed. by C. J. Towler (Emneth), Ltd.. Wisbech. The application concerns 15 services.

A general application for higher charges has also been made by the Western National Omnibus Co., Ltd., and the Southern National Omnibus Co., Ltd. The concerns last increased charges in February, 1951. Now it is proposed to add id. to fares from Id.-5d., id. to those between 6d. and Is., 2d. to those between Is. Id. and Is. lid, and so on, giving a maximum addition of 6d. If the application succeeds, the fare tables will be generally revised to remove anomalies.

Return fares will be established orr a new basis. The minimum return charge will be 9d., and thereafter, where twice the single fare is less than 3s., the return fare will be double the single fare less 15 per cent. The maximum discount of 25 per cent. will be offered in the case of charges based on a single fare over 2s. 6id.

Thirty services are affected by the application of David MacBrayne, Ltd., to increase charges by amounts varying from id. to 9d., and to raise return rates by 10 per cent.

Ribble Falls In Ribble Motor Services, Ltd., has applied for permission to bring its charges into line with those of Scottish Omnibuses, Ltd., on common sections of route.

Red and White Services, Ltd., has applied for permission to abolish workmen's returns and to revise seasonticket rates in the Ross-on-Wye-Hereford area. Seven services in all arc affected.

• Last week, Wallace Arnold Tours. Ltd., Leeds, in an application heard by the Yorkshire Licensing Authority, proposed increasing the charge on a workmen's service by 100 per cent. it was stated that a loss of £20 a week has been incurred on this service for the past five years, and that even if the increases were granted, it would still be run at a loss.
