TC impressed by remedial measures

NO ACTION WAS taken against the licence held by Rotherhambased McGrails Car Transport after North-Eastern Traffic Commissioner Tom Macartney was impressed with the steps taken to solve maintenance difficulties 11 The company, which holds a licence for four vehicles and four trailers, appeared before the TC at a Leeds public inquiry.

Vehicle examiner Ross Miller said three immediate and two delayed prohibitions had been issued to the company's vehicles — two of which were endorsed `S: There were obvious shortcomings within the maintenance system, particularly with regards to tyre condition. Tyre defects were listed on every prohibition but one. Two were issued after a trailer became detached on a roundabout between Sheffield and Manchester.

Additionally, periods between inspections had been extended on occasions, and a number of safety inspection sheets were not fully completed. The maintenance contractor had been changed a few weeks before his visit. He did agree that the company had a large stock of tyres.

Managing director Mark McGrail said the company delivered upmarket single cars in enclosed vans and trailers to customers throughout the UK. Tyres were inspected daily. All the drivers were equipped with a tyre gauge and they inspected the tyres before setting off.

Tyres tended to get damaged by kerbs in dealership premises. The accident on the roundabout happened when securing bolts on the towing hitch sheared, and they could not find out why this had occurred. As a result, the firm had stopped using the trailers.

After examining letters sent from the company to the original maintenance contractor, complaining that parts billed had not been used and asking for detailed invoices, the TC said he wished more operators took such an interest in the work being done by their maintenance contractors.

McGrail outlined the steps that had been taken to improve matters and also gave a number of undertakings about the firm's maintenance arrangements.
