Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

MORE THAN A quarter (28%) of the 270 operators who responded to CM's Trucking Britain Out Of Recession (TBOOR) survey say their firms have already started to recover from the recession.

Another 45% expect to recover within the next 12 months.

Given these results, it is then not surprising that, among the respondents at least, hope is rife.

A total of 64% are either fairly optimistic or very optimistic about the next three months, while 75% are either fairly optimistic or very optimistic about the coming 12 months.

While the forecast is more positive than we had expected, the recent history reported by respondents reveals the impact of the recession: • 60% said both revenue and profit were down in the past quarter compared with the same quarter last year. • 47% have not acquired any new vehicles in the past 12 months • 62% have not acquired any used vehicles in the past 12 months.

• 46% have been forced to lay off permanent staff since the beginning of 2009.

• 46% have frozen basic pay since the start of 2009.

Perhaps reflecting the number of operators that have been forced out of the industry because of the economic downturn. 48% of respondents to the survey expect to emerge from the recession having made market share gains.

Also, since the recession has forced all operators to have a much tighter focus on costs, 65% of the respondents expect they'll emerge with improved operational efficiency.

TBOOR is being supported by Motor

Transport, Truck & Driver, TruckNet UK, and Roadtransport.com. It is also being backed by DAF, MAN, Mercedes-Benz, Michelin. Renault Trucks, Road Haulage Association. Scalia and Volvo.
